Here's Why Coffee is the Smarter First Date
Now I know what you’re thinking: “Does coffee count as a first date?”
If you’re part of the younger generation, the question is totally valid. But if you’ve seen dating culture back in the day, this would not even be a question.
In fact, a Reddit discussion on early 90s dating has multiple mentions of coffee dates, alongside concert dates, raves, church dates, bookstore dates, movie dates, and park dates. These comments came from a pool of people in which some didn’t date until college, some didn’t have cellphones, and some found a date through newspaper dating advertise

The Coffee Date Debate
Coffee as a date idea has been controversial in recent years, with people arguing over whether it is the perfect date or a low-effort gesture.
It’s been a while since coffee has been hyped on the internet. Back then it was milk tea, and when the pandemic came, it was suddenly Dalgona coffee and a bunch of new local coffee shops popping up here and there.
This also has to be part of the reason why coffee dates are deemed “cheap” and “low-effort” nowadays—it has gotten mainstream; too mainstream that people see it as overly casual for what should be a “date.”
EHL Insights in Switzerland states that coffee has evolved from a simple morning stimulant into a defining pillar of global culture, lifestyle, and economy.
In an article by Cosmopolitan , dating expert Dr. Wendy Walsh says that she understands why some might be offended about being asked to grab lattes. “Many women like to see a man sacrifice for them,” she says. “Spending money on an official date makes some women feel that they are being courted. It’s an age-old mating strategy that may not always apply in today’s times when many women earn more money than men.”
But the whole controversy regarding coffee dates makes sense, both sides being valid. While it all falls to preference, coffee dates actually make one of the best environments for two people getting to know each other.
Reasons why coffee makes the best date
Coffee dates keep the pressure low
Dates (especially first ones) are one of the trickiest situations to be in. Unless you are best friends from childhood, you never really know how to act, speak, or maybe even present yourself. Going straight to something as romantic as a dinner may be a little too much, too soon. Of course, you wouldn’t want to jump straight to activities either, like a theme park or the movies, where you would be moving or engaged in something else rather than talking.
Coffee dates set a mood that is somewhere down the middle—not too casual but not too intimate. There is no grand setting, no fancy dressing up, and no pressure for the date to become more than what it is. Usually in a daytime setting, the atmosphere should be just right should there be people around or not. Moreover, it is relaxed enough to make an easy exit, avoiding leaving an awkward environment in case things do not go too well.
Coffee dates have the perfect duration
One of the biggest advantages of a coffee date is that it doesn't lock either person into a long schedule. A latte to drink and maybe a small pastry to snack on should last for about an hour to two, considering the talking, but if compatibility is hard to find, even less than an hour is enough.
A full-course dinner can easily stretch beyond two hours, especially if appetizers, dessert, and drinks are involved. If the conversation flows naturally, that's great. But if there is little chemistry, both people may end up staying simply because leaving halfway through dinner feels rude.
Coffee dates are flexible. They can end quickly or naturally evolve into something more. If the conversation is going exceptionally well, nothing stops the two of you from extending the date by taking a walk, visiting a bookstore, exploring a nearby market, or even deciding to have dinner afterward.
Coffee allows neither person to feel indebted
Some people feel guilty if someone spends a significant amount on them. Others feel pressure to continue seeing someone simply because a lot of money was spent. In some cases, the person paying may even expect something in return.
With coffee, those expectations become much smaller. Since the bill is relatively affordable, treating someone or even splitting the bill doesn't carry the same weight as an expensive dinner date.
This reduces the feeling that someone "owes" the other person anything, making the interaction more comfortable and avoiding the possibility of creating misunderstandings in the future.
Coffee dates have some of the best locations
The best first dates are built around getting to know each other, and cafés are almost designed for exactly that.
Unlike movie theaters, concerts, or amusement parks where attention is divided, coffee shops encourage conversation. The relaxed atmosphere, comfortable seating, and moderate background noise allow people to talk without feeling like every word is being overheard.
Many cafés also offer enough flexibility if the conversation slows down. You can order another drink, share dessert, play a board game if the café has one, or simply people-watch together. Even the location here matters.
Coffee shops can be found inside malls, near parks, beside bookstores, close to museums, or along walkable streets. If the date is going well, there's almost always somewhere nearby to continue spending time together. A simple coffee date can naturally turn into an afternoon of exploring without either person planning an elaborate itinerary.
The debate over coffee dates will probably continue for years. Some people associate expensive dinners with effort and romance, while others value simple settings that encourage genuine conversation.
But if the goal of a first date is to discover compatibility instead of creating a picture-perfect social media moment, coffee checks nearly every box. It is affordable, low-pressure, flexible, and centered around conversation—the one thing that determines if there should be a second date.
Sometimes, the best first date isn't the fanciest restaurant in town or an adrenaline rush to create butterflies in the stomach; it can be two people sharing a cup of coffee and finding out if they actually enjoy being together.
